The Hungry Tiger Wakes

That's the exact headline we sent out to readers of Jurojin Weekly in the tiny hours of this morning. This week's issue discusses the resumption of China's appetite for raw materials and energy products. On the one hand, the Chinese acting as manufacturers to the world need these raw materials to turn into manufactured goods and of course they need coal, oil and gas to fire their factories. But on the other, the pace at which demand has returned fueled largely by demand for infrastructure spending has surprised even the most ardent commodity bull.

We just shared with clients in our weekly update the following nuggets.
  • China boosted its imports of iron ore to a record 57 million metric tonnes in April. China is the world's biggest consumer of iron ore.
  • At the same time, China's bought a record 399,833 metric tonnes of copper and copper in April, compared with 374,957 tons in March.
  • And as for oil imports - China increased its crude imports by 13.6 percent year over year in April, guzzling 3.9 million barrels a day. China is the world's second-biggest consumer of oil products. You get one guess as to who's number one (the U.S. imports 10.03 million barrels per day - beat that, China!)
